Perth primary school students to take part in Sailing World Championships
Western Australian primary school students will have the chance to learn new skills with athletes from around the world during the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.
Education Minister Liz Constable said primary schools are invited to participate in a range of excursions and activities during one of the biggest international sailing events of the year, which will take place off Fremantle from December 3-18.
The Perth 2011 Schools Engagement Programme, curated by North Street Productions, will encourage young West Australians to foster links with visiting athletes during the World Championships and the 16-day Worlds Festival.
Dr Constable said students will be able to work closely with Olympic athletes during their quest to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games, with 75 per cent of places in the sailing competition being decided in Perth in December.
"The Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships present an unprecedented opportunity for primary school students to learn about the nations involved in this event and the sport of sailing," she said.
"The Schools Engagement Programme provides a chance for Western Australian students to not only witness some of the world's best athletes in action, but to learn about the sport that has a rich history in this State.
"From learning about sailing theory, to building a model yacht, watching the sea rescue helicopter in action and talking to athletes from all over the world, there is plenty of choice available."
A range of excursions are being offered to schools, many of which are free of charge, and interested schools should visit http://www.perth2011.com to register their interest.
