In a major sporting coup, Western Australia has been selected to host the Australian Davis Cup World Group play-off tie against Uzbekistan in September.

Acting Tourism Minister John Day said Australia would play Uzbekistan at the Cottesloe Tennis Club in a bid to extend their stay in the World Group into 2015.

"The Cottesloe Tennis Club is a great venue to host the event with its stunning backdrop of Cottesloe Beach and the Indian Ocean," Mr Day said.

"It's a fantastic view for players and spectators and will display a beautiful part of our State to everyone watching the tie on television.

"Western Australia last hosted the Davis Cup in 2004 at the Royal Kings Park Tennis Club when Australia played Morocco, so it is fantastic to see the event return to Perth in 2014.

"The Australian Davis Cup team is the second most successful team after the USA to ever compete in the tournament, winning 28 titles and attracting household names such as Pat Rafter, Lleyton Hewitt and Todd Woodbridge.

"After being defeated by France in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group, Australia is expected to put up tough competition against Uzbekistan, providing exciting on-court action for all spectators."

The State Government, through Tourism WA, is proud to support the Davis Cup in WA.

The Minister said the Davis Cup tennis matches were the perfect addition to WA's world-class events calendar for 2014.

"Western Australia is already host to the Hyundai Hopman Cup at the Perth Arena, which continues to be a popular sporting event attracting a great mix of international teams and tennis superstars," he said.
