Historic Victoria Hotel in Roebourne to be restored and redeveloped
FORM to roll out creative programs to build economic and cultural opportunities
A multimillion-dollar restoration of a heritage building in Roebourne and a two-year program of creative initiatives will share in $3 million of funding through the State Government's Royalties for Regions program.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman today announced the Victoria Hotel Restoration project in Roebourne and FORM's Building a State of Creativity project had received $2 million and $1 million respectively, under the $30 million Pilbara Cities Economic Diversification Fund.
Mr Redman said the landmark Victoria Hotel, purchased by the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation in 2013, would be restored to its early 1900s architectural form.
"Once restored, the corporation will occupy the building to create a tourism and cultural hub for the Roebourne community with retail space, a small business incubator and training facilities," he said.
FORM will use the Royalties for Regions investment for a range of regional programming initiatives to create opportunities for growing tourism, small business, Aboriginal enterprise and creative industries.
The Minister said the projects would contribute to the region's economic growth and creates jobs in the tourism and creative sectors.
"There is so much more to the Pilbara than just mining. These projects will bring renewed focus to the region's rich cultural heritage and emerging creative industry," he said.
"Tourism and community activation are key pillars identified in the Pilbara Regional Investment Blueprint and these projects will contribute to the realisation of the region's 2050 vision.
"This Royalties for Regions investment will contribute to a diversified and strengthened regional economy."
