Polytechnic West represents changing needs of training
Training and Workforce Development Minister Peter Collier today launched a new era in training for Swan TAFE, as part of the Liberal-National Government's strategy to transform Western Australia's training sector.
Mr Collier unveiled the college's new name - Polytechnic West - in response to his call to provide colleges with greater autonomy, while giving them the opportunity to become more flexible, innovative and effective in a competitive marketplace.
"Today's unveiling marks a fundamental change in training not only for the college, but for the sector State-wide," he said.
"It contributes greatly to raising the status of training and TAFE colleges, while providing the opportunity to present itself as a centre of excellence.
"The college has evolved over many years to cater for changes to the economic environment and developing needs in training.
"With its new brand, Polytechnic West will stand out from its competitors, with the opportunity to highlight its innovative and industry-led training solutions."
Polytechnic West is the biggest publicly-funded trade training provider in WA, with the majority of delivery taking place at campuses in Thornlie, Balga, Midland, Bentley and Carlisle.
Training is delivered in business, information technology and community services, with specialist training in equine and animal studies; fashion and textiles; aviation; building and construction; automotive; hospitality; electrical; and metals and resources.
"The organisation has been recognised with several awards for training excellence," the Minister said.
"This includes the Transforming Trade Training Program, which won the Premier's Award for Excellence in Public Sector Management in the category of Developing the Economy.
"It is this kind of creative and innovative response we need from training providers, industry and community if our workforce development plans for the future of this State are to succeed."
