Premier hails Comet Bay College
$46million college now caters for years 8-12
New facilities include 14 learning areas, science and IT laboratories
Premier Colin Barnett today officially opened the $20.5million second stage of Comet Bay College at Secret Harbour.
Mr Barnett said the completion of the senior school facilities, which opened in February, meant the college offered a full secondary education for students in years 8 to 12.
"Having only opened in 2006, Comet Bay College has come such a long way that it is one of the youngest schools to have been selected to become an Independent Public School, from 2012," he said.
"This means it has been identified as having the capacity, the leadership and the support to make decisions about the best ways to educate young people in the local community.
"The new buildings are outstanding and this year's group of year 12 students, who are currently sitting their WACE exams, have benefited all year from the new classrooms, studios, laboratories and other modern facilities.
"The current group of staff and students has a unique opportunity to foster a culture for the school and set the standards and expectations for future generations to follow."
The new stage 2 facilities include:
14 general learning areas, one education support room and seminar rooms
auditorium
materials technology studios
information technology (three laboratories)
two chemistry and three multi-purpose laboratories, and preparation area
drawing and painting studio and multi-media laboratory
physical education fitness centre, change rooms and toilets
two staff areas.
The Premier said the college had strong programs for gifted and talented students in English; mathematics; science; and society and environment and also offered extension programs in drama, art, surfing and science.
Mr Barnett commended the school on its ever-improving NAPLAN results and specialist Australian rules football program, which had already produced one student selected for the AFL national draft.
