Premier unveils Perth Mint's Anzac spirit

Premier Colin Barnett has paid tribute to Australia's servicemen and women at today's unveiling of Australia's ANZAC Spirit 100th Anniversary Coin Series, crafted by The Perth Mint.

  • Coin series to honour Anzacs and tell story of Australia's involvement in WWI
  • Coins to be released over five years

Premier Colin Barnett has paid tribute to Australia's servicemen and women at today's unveiling of Australia's ANZAC Spirit 100th Anniversary Coin Series, crafted by The Perth Mint.

The launch has been timed to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of Britain's - and therefore Australia's - declaration of war on Germany on August 4, 1914. The limited-edition, collectable coins, will tell the remarkable story of Australia's involvement in World War I.

Mr Barnett said the declaration of war had triggered many significant events and this commemorative coin series would mark these extraordinary milestones in Australia's history.

"I would like to acknowledge The Perth Mint and its contribution to the community as it honours the sacrifice and selflessness of our military, whose camaraderie and spirit was forged with the original ANZACs," he said.

Australia's ANZAC Spirit 100th Anniversary Coin Series will be released over five years. The first release consists of the 'Declaration of War' silver coin and 'To Our Last Man' gold release.  A premium three-coin set comprised of the 'Answering of the Call', 'Farewell to the Family' and 'Australia's First Action' silver issues will also be available.

Offered with varied mintage limits, the 1oz and 1/2oz pure silver and 1/4oz gold coins will give people the opportunity to build a magnificent collection over time.  The Premier said he understood The Perth Mint always received a great response to its military-themed coins.

"Australians have a great deal of pride in the men and women of the defence forces and with the anniversary of the conflict, a great deal of interest in the events of World War I," he said.

"This commemorative coin series will honour the ANZACs, from the first Australian and New Zealand soldiers who came together at Gallipoli, to all the men and women who continue to serve the two countries.

"In coming months there will be several events to mark the extraordinary contribution of the ANZACs at Gallipoli and over the next five years there will be several other events to mark the progress of WWI and honour the contribution of Australian servicemen and women."

To develop this program, The Perth Mint worked closely with the Australian War Memorial, Department of Defence, National Trust and the Returned and Services League of Australia.
