Premier Colin Barnett has welcomed assurances from the Commonwealth Bank that staffing levels would not be affected and BankWest's headquarters would remain in Western Australia, despite today's takeover bid.

Mr Barnett said he had this morning spoken with Commonwealth Bank chief executive officer Ralph Norris, who had given the commitments, along with a pledge that BankWest would continue to operate independently of the Commonwealth Bank.

"If the sale is approved, it will be a good thing to see BankWest continue in this way. With these commitments it will be a good outcome for staff and a good outcome for WA," the Premier said.

"It will give BankWest as a financial institution greater strength and return the bank to Australian ownership."

Mr Barnett said any questions relating to competition would be addressed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission when assessing the purchase proposal.
