Protecting Western Australia's natural resources

The State Government has committed $1.

  • Funding supports 48 projects across Western Australia
  • Recognition of conservation work by community groups

The State Government has committed $1.3million towards projects working to protect Western Australia's natural resources.

Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman said the funding supported 48 projects from the Kimberley to the South Coast.

"There are a diverse range of projects which ultimately aim to recover and protect some of the State's most important natural assets," Mr Redman said.

Environment Minister Bill Marmion said community organisations, conservation groups, schools and local governments were amongst the grant recipients.

"These are people who live in the community and are best placed to determine priority areas in terms of conservation and rehabilitation," Mr Marmion said.

Funding will include regeneration work along the Canning River, restoration at Walters Brook, biodiversity enhancement at Booragoon Lake Reserve and revegetation at Lake Claremont.

Along the South Coast, the Wilson Inlet Catchment Committee has been allocated $50,000 to control Eastern States wattle infestations in the Denbarker area.

In the Esperance region, the Northern Mallee Declared Species Group will receive $40,000 to control wild dogs.

In the Pilbara, the Ngurawaana Group Aboriginal Corporation will receive $22,500 to assist with fire management, monitoring of flora and fauna and weed control along the Lower Fortescue River.

Funding priorities are set by the WA Natural Resource Management (NRM) Ministerial Council and include the protection of land, water, marine and coastal environments, and recovery and conservation of biodiversity.
