Rejuvenated drug and alcohol centre in Midland
New location for Community Drug Service in Midland
New centre offers counselling, prevention and medical services
The Northeast Metropolitan Community Drug Service has a new home following the purchase and renovation of a building in Stafford Street.
Available for people living in Midland and surrounding suburbs, the service is delivered through a partnership between Holyoake and Next Step Drug and Alcohol Services, with the Drug and Alcohol Office providing funding of about $820,000 a year.
Mental Health Minister Helen Morton officially opened the new building today and said the Drug and Alcohol Office also contributed $250,000 towards the redevelopment and office fit-out.
"This new site offers superior accommodation, both in terms of size and quality, which is great for the clients and also staff of this important service," Mrs Morton said.
"Last year, the Northeast Metropolitan Community Drug Service supported 698 people who were seeking help with their alcohol and drug-related issues, and this new location in the old town centre improves access and convenience for clients.
"The new centre will offer counselling, prevention and medical services, along with the Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Network that provides assistance to people to manage their withdrawal from alcohol and other drug use in their own home."
The opening of the new building coincides with Drug Action Week, which finishes on Saturday, June 23. Drug Action Week 2012 is a week of activities held nationally to raise awareness about alcohol and other drugs issues in Australia. The week also highlights the achievements of those dedicated people who work to reduce alcohol and drug-related harm.
