Road Safety Minister Liza Harvey today marked World Remembrance Day for road traffic victims by honouring those killed on Western Australian roads.

Mrs Harvey said 179 white crosses at the St George's Cathedral represented the number of people killed on WA roads in 2011.

"Last year in WA, 179 people were killed and a further 2,453 were seriously injured, placing an enormous emotional, physical and financial burden on family members, friends and the community," she said.

"By placing 179 white crosses here today, we remember the tragic loss of life on our roads and can begin to work together to prevent further losses of life."

The Minister said she hoped pedestrians passing the display would pause at the 179 white crosses and commemorate those lost lives.

"We must all share the responsibility for road safety in order to reduce the number of people dying or becoming seriously injured on our roads - a burden I am committed to reducing on our community," she said.

"This is a reminder of why the State Government is committed to reaching the goals of the State's road safety strategy, Towards Zero.

"More than 100,000 men, women and children are killed or seriously injured daily on the world's roads each year - that equates to more than one person killed or seriously injured every second.

"More than ever, it is these people who will be in our thoughts on World Remembrance Day.
