Revitalised South Perth foreshore now a tourist stop
Liberal National Government delivers on 2013 election commitment
Riverfront gateway to South Perth transformed with $1 million investment
The South Perth Promenade has been transformed to become a befitting gateway to one of Perth's top visitor and tourist destinations on the Swan River.
Environment Minister Albert Jacob said the State Government had invested more than $1 million through the Riverbank program to replace crumbling river walling at the popular riverside destination near Mends Street.
"In 2013, the Liberal National Government committed to fund the replacement of the inadequate river wall at the Mends Street jetty and we have now delivered on that promise," Mr Jacob said.
"This project was an important engineering project and its completion has made the South Perth Promenade safer, more attractive and easier for the community to access.
"The promenade is a high traffic area and the gateway to South Perth on the Swan River and now boasts the facilities expected at an important tourist and visitor destination in Perth.
"When visitors arrive now, it is to an impressive development that reflects the very best of what our city has to offer."
The Minister said the development included the replacement of 355 metres of collapsed river walling and the beautification of the promenade including seats, lighting and other facilities for visitors.
"Riverbank funding is an excellent example of State Government, local government and the community working together to improve water quality and the amenity of the Swan Canning Riverpark," he said.
The Liberal National Government invests $1 million annually in the Riverbank program and increased the fund with an extra $3 million over three years in the 2014-15 State Budget.
Mr Jacob said Riverbank worked on a cost-sharing arrangement and since 2008, the Government had invested more than $12 million in the program, matched by local government contributions that had seen $24 million invested in 148 projects.
