The community is being asked to comment on a proposal to amend the Metropolitan Region Scheme to allow an aged care facility to be constructed on Lot 59 Wilkins Road, Kalamunda.

Planning Minister John Day said there was an urgent need for aged care facilities in the Hills and a development on Wilkins Road would help to address the shortage.

"Currently zoned Parks and Recreation, the amendment will see the nearly 11 hectare site rezoned to Urban to enable the development of aged care accommodation," Mr Day said.

"The lot on Wilkins Road has been identified as an appropriate location due to its proximity to the Kalamunda town centre, size and access to essential services such as water.  The Shire of Kalamunda's Local Planning Strategy also identifies the site as a viable location for an aged care facility.

"Public consultation and further consideration by the WA Planning Commission will ensure there is a full assessment of the site."

The Minister said he was pleased the shire had also recently initiated a Local Planning Scheme amendment for the former Department of Agriculture site in Bougainvillea Avenue, Forrestfield.

"This amendment will also facilitate the development of aged care accommodation in the Kalamunda shire," he said.

"I understand the shire is in discussions with the Environmental Protection Authority regarding this amendment."
