Rottnest golf on course for July tee-off
- Projects on track to increase visitation to Rottnest Island
Construction due to start on Rottnest Island golf course in March
Tender released for complete upgrade and expansion of island campground
Golfers are set to be on the Rottnest Island fairway by July thanks to the awarding of a $1.2million contract to create the first stage of the project.
Tourism Minister Kim Hames said Environmental Industries had been appointed to carry out construction of new tees, greens and fairways, designed by high-profile golfing firm, Davey Shearer.
"This new course will give Rottnest Island enthusiasts a new attraction to enjoy, and entice more visitors to the island during the critical quiet months of winter," Dr Hames said.
The course will be managed by Golf Oracle PL which manages Maylands, Embleton and Yokine public courses. The company is due to take over management of the country club and develop a pro shop.
The Rottnest Island golf course will be a 5,420-metre, nine-hole (18 with alternative tees), 70-par course set around the existing course in the middle of the island.
The $1.2million construction includes greens and tees that will be watered by a mixture of grey and desalinated water.
In addition, a tender has been opened to upgrade the current campground to 40 landscaped sites, with a new camp kitchen and ablution area.
"This will ensure Rottnest Island is a holiday destination for all budgets and holiday styles in WA, from campers to those who prefer a few extra luxuries," the Minister said.
