Royal Perth Hospital trauma verification certificate presentation

Western Australia's only major trauma service has received international recognition for providing a multi-trauma service.

Western Australia's only major trauma service has received international recognition for providing a multi-trauma service.

The State Major Trauma Service at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) has undergone an extensive process to verify that it meets the Australian Royal College of Surgeons criteria to provide international standard trauma care for patients.

A key component of the service is the State Major Trauma Unit (SMTU), which sees all patients being treated with multiple trauma at RPH being managed in a single, purpose-built unit.

The RPH unit is the only one in WA to receive the accreditation.

Health Minister Kim Hames said the latest recognition highlighted the State Government's key decision to retain Royal Perth Hospital.

"RPH is a centre for excellence in health care and this is yet another example of why it is important this flagship hospital remains open to care for patients in Western Australia," Dr Hames said.

"This recognition shows the work of the dedicated staff at the SMTU was of world's best practice.

"The rigorous process undertaken to gain this accreditation is a credit to the State Major Trauma Unit and all the hospital staff who participate in the care of patients admitted for the treatment of trauma.

"This recognition shows the people of WA that our health service achieves internationally recognised standards for care.

"The State Major Trauma Unit is a service that all of us can take pride in and be assured of the very best health outcomes for anyone suffering traumatic injuries, particularly multi-injured patients requiring care across numerous specialties and disciplines."

Dr Arthas Flabouris from The Royal College of Surgeons said trauma verification was a major undertaking for any trauma service and provided a valuable process of self-evaluation and independent multidisciplinary peer review.

"This accreditation is a testament to the strength and the future enhancement of trauma care provision at RPH," Dr Flabouris said.

RPH executive director Dr Paul Mark said the recognition of the SMTU was a significant moment in the service's history.

"We know we provide world-class care at the trauma unit and this recognition is proof of that wonderful care provided by our specialist team," Dr Mark said.
