A statue commemorating the life and service of Sir Charles Court was unveiled today, marking what would have been the 100th birthday of the former Premier.

Premier Colin Barnett said the memorial would become a landmark of the city.

"It is symbolically located on St Georges Terrace near Parliament House and the Woodside building to highlight Sir Charles' role in the development of the North-West Shelf and Western Australia," Mr Barnett said.

"The statue embodies Sir Charles passion for nurturing Western Australian business. The memorial will be an enduring testimony to a truly remarkable West Australian."

The statue was unveiled by Governor Malcolm McCusker before Federal, State and local government representatives and members of the extended Court family.

"Sir Charles helped position the State for the future.  He established the foundations of a strong resource industry from which we continue to benefit today," the Premier said.

"He was famous for his regular walks down the hill from Parliament to the CBD.

"Sir Charles was a strong advocate for WA and a man who defended the right of the State to manage its own affairs."

The memorial was announced in 2008 by then Premier Alan Carpenter to honour Sir Charles Court's extraordinary life.

Artist Tony Jones was commissioned to complete the work.  Mr Jones is known for Eliza, a much loved statue in the shallows of the Swan River at Crawley.
