Health Minister Kim Hames today unveiled mock-up rooms of both a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patient room that will be in the new children's hospital.

As part of the robust design process the mock-up rooms, built on the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) site, have been developed to provide real-life versions of what the rooms will be like in the new hospital to help identify any layout and access issues.

Along with the PICU and NICU rooms and the already unveiled inpatient room, the following mock-up rooms are also being developed:

  • emergency acute bay

  • theatre recovery bay

  • treatment room

  • outpatient consultation room

  • medication room/clean utility room

  • dirty utility room.

Dr Hames said the visit to PMH also coincided with the first anniversary of the ground breaking at the new children's hospital site. The project remains on track for completion in 2015.

"Building the new children's hospital is continuing at a rapid pace with underground works nearly finished and work having started on the ground floor, stairwells and lift cores," he said.

"With less than three years to go until the new children's hospital opens, John Holland's construction team on site is working hard to ensure we stay on target."

The Child and Adolescent Health Service, which includes PMH, Child and Adolescent Community Health, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and the New Children's Hospital Project, has also begun change management planning to ensure a successful transition to the new hospital.
