The South Hedland Bowling and Tennis Club (SHBTC) will be improved with the construction of a new clubhouse, new car park, landscaping, fencing and upgrades to the tennis courts and bowling greens.

  • $2million Royalties for Regions Pilbara Cities funding for recreation club

  • Provides improved sporting and recreation facilities in South Hedland

The South Hedland Bowling and Tennis Club (SHBTC) will be improved with the construction of a new clubhouse, new car park, landscaping, fencing and upgrades to the tennis courts and bowling greens.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the funding was being made available through the State Government's Royalties for Regions' Pilbara Cities Community Fund.

"This investment will enhance the quality of life and wellbeing of the community and provide further employment opportunities," Mr Grylls said.

The redevelopment of the SHBTC was recommended as a priority in the 2006 Sports Facilities Audit, adopted by the Town of Port Hedland as a guide for sporting facility development in the town.

The club's upgrade, managed by the Town of Port Hedland, will provide improved recreation services for the South Hedland community, including bowling greens; tennis courts; darts; and 8 ball/snooker, as well as function and restaurant facilities.

"The club will have a new function room with the capacity to hold up to 250 patrons; bar and restaurant facilities; and storage and office space," the Minister said.

"The club is close to development precincts and will provide essential community sporting and recreation infrastructure to these areas."

The total project cost is $4million with BHP Billiton contributing $1million. The Pilbara Development Commission has also previously provided funding for the project totalling $600,000 through the Royalties for Regions Regional Grants Scheme.
