Western Australian motorsport fans will be treated to live V8 Supercar action for at least the next three years.

Tourism WA has signed an agreement with V8 Supercars and the WA Sporting Car Club, locking in the event at Barbagallo Raceway until 2018.

Tourism Minister Kim Hames said the deal would cement Perth as a drawcard for Australian motorsport each May.

"The Perth Super Sprint is the State's largest motorsport event, attracting superstars of the sport such as Craig Lowndes, Mark Winterbottom and WA's own Garth Tander," Dr Hames said.

"Each year, tens of thousands of fans attend Barbagallo Raceway to see the cream of Australia's motorsport talent over the three days of racing."

The Minister said the V8 Supercars showcased WA to national and international audiences, especially in key tourism markets such as New South Wales, Victoria and Malaysia, through live broadcast and other media.

"This is another example of Perth's exciting and growing events calendar," he said.

"We had the Socceroos play Bangladesh to a sell-out crowd here in Perth last week in their first match on home soil since their Asia Cup win, and their first home World Cup qualifier on the road to Russia 2018.

"The new Perth Stadium, due to open in 2018, will provide the opportunity for us to continue to attract popular and even bigger events."

Dr Hames said the State Government had a strategy in place to increase the value of tourism to $12 billion by 2020, and events played an integral role in achieving this goal.

"Not only do events attract visitors, they also help to support local businesses, boost the economy, add vibrancy to a destination and help raise the profile of the State through valuable media exposure," he said.
