State Government gives green light to the 2010 Australasian Safari

The State Government will officially launch the Australasian Safari at Hillarys Boat Harbour this afternoon.

Unofficially known as the 'Dakar Downunder' for its extreme off-road challenges, the Australasian Safari attracts some of the world's most talented and extreme moto, quad and auto competitors to a week of adventure through the State.

Tourism Minister Liz Constable said there would be benefits for each region the Safari visited en route.

"Regional communities along the Safari route will benefit economically and socially from the visitors the event will bring to the area and the media exposure generated each day," Dr Constable said.

"The event is supported by Eventscorp, with coverage of the event to be broadcast into key international tourism markets.

"Perth and regional Western Australia will be profiled in a one-hour television program on Network Ten's free-to-air 24-hour sports channel, ONE, providing our State with a great opportunity to highlight our extraordinary experiences."

The course will travel through the Golden Outback region, historic goldfields, remote desert, rugged bush and coastal dunes.

Considered one of the world's great endurance events, the Australasian Safari is this year attracting international entries from countries including Brazil, Sweden, China, Japan, Sweden and New Zealand.

More than 100 competitors are expected to enter this year's Australasian Safari and will be flagged off at the official start tonight.
