State Government prioritises development of activity centres

In response to the new Activity Centres policy recently launched by Planning Minister John Day, the process of prioritising the development of activity centres has begun for key areas in the Perth and Peel region.

Mr Day and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls today announced that development would be progressed for selected activity centres in conjunction with the State Government land development agency, LandCorp.

Mr Grylls said the development of these key areas would offer an increased number, a greater diversity and an increased density of dwellings close to public transport, employment opportunities and other amenities and would help address housing affordability and choice.

"Future development will maximise the use of existing infrastructure and State-owned land to create places of vibrancy with residential and commercial components," he said.

"The development of key areas is just one initiative the State is prioritising to help accommodate Perth's growth."

Mr Day said Directions 2031, the new strategic planning framework that would shape the future of the Perth and Peel regions for the next 20 years, had identified a number of areas as key centres of regional growth.

"Planning is already under way for the successful development of areas such as Rockingham, Armadale and Murdoch, which have been identified as examples of key activity centres," Mr Day said.

"A co-ordinated approach through the Ministerial Taskforce on approvals, development and sustainability will identify, prioritise and set the vision for strategic activity centres."

Following Ministerial Taskforce direction and approvals from Cabinet, LandCorp will be responsible for co-ordinating the planning and approvals phase through the Western Australian Planning Commission and for undertaking the subsequent delivery of the general development phase of the work.

Private sector involvement will be sought at the earliest possible opportunity to drive

activity centre development.
