Premier Colin Barnett said Western Australian timber from Perry Lakes Stadium, which was built for the games, would be recycled and used as part of the new facility's balcony decking.

"The fact that something from the 1962 Commonwealth Games will be used in the construction of the CHOGM 2011 Leaders' Retreat venue provides a wonderful connection between the two historic events," Mr Barnett said.

"We are fortunate that through the Perry Lakes Redevelopment Project the original wandoo stadium seating was salvaged and available for opportunities such as this."

The Premier said the expansion of the State-owned Fraser's complex was progressing well.

"The State Reception Centre is really taking shape and will provide a true retreat setting for Commonwealth leaders that appropriately showcases Perth," he said.

The project involves the replacement of the temporary marquee on top of the complex with a permanent high-quality facility and expansion of the adjacent Botanical Cafe to provide affordable alfresco dining and BYO service.

"The completed facilities will be a lasting legacy for the WA community with the new venue available to host big receptions, weddings, dinners and major events, while the upgraded cafe will offer a relaxed setting with one of Perth's most stunning outlooks," Mr Barnett said.

Last week, the State Government announced general retail stores in the Perth Special Trading Precinct would be able to trade until 9pm on the Queen's Birthday Holiday on Friday, October 28.

"I expect Perth residents will come into the city during CHOGM to experience the event and participate in activities such as the Commonwealth Festival.  The extended trading hours will add to the vibrancy of the city on this day," the Premier said.
