State funds to solve Busselton school traffic problem
- $300,000 to City of Busselton to address serious traffic concerns
The State Government will provide $300,000 to the City of Busselton to help address traffic safety concerns at St Joseph's School and Mackillop Catholic College in Busselton.
Premier Colin Barnett today said the funding would enable the City of Busselton to construct a separate area for buses to drop off and pick up students.
"Currently, significant congestion occurs on College Avenue and the internal road network that services the schools," Mr Barnett said.
"This seriously compromises the safety of students and drivers."
The Premier said the school was accessed by 30 buses each morning and afternoon transporting students from various locations outside of Busselton - including Margaret River and Capel.
"There is a significant level of conflict between buses and pedestrians as well as general traffic on College Avenue. Traffic is often banked up in this area with cars and buses blocking the roundabout," he said.
Mr Barnett said that as the schools grew, the problem would likely worsen.
"Over the next few years the combined school population is forecast to be around 1,500 students," the Premier said.
The new works will involve construction of a separate off-road bus area which will greatly reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users.
The council is currently finalising its planning and approvals and construction is expected to commence later this financial year.
