Supporting small business growth

The State Government is continuing its commitment to support small business by appointing two new members to the board of the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC).

The State Government is continuing its commitment to support small business by appointing two new members to the board of the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC).

Small Business Minister Joe Francis announced the appointment of two small business owners to the board for a three-year term.

They are Broome businessman Anthony Masi and Susan Bailey, former president of the WA Housing Industry Association.

Mr Francis said the new members would add to the first-hand business experience already on the board.

Anthony Masi, a pharmacist, has owned and operated successful small businesses in rural Western Australia since 1991. These include a camera store, a health food shop, an IGA grocery store and two pharmacies.  He currently employs 35 staff in Broome.  He is a board member of the Kimberley Pilbara Medicare Local; and Boab Health, and a committee member of The Pharmacy Guild of Australia (WA Branch).

Mr Masi is also an active member of the Kyle Andrews Foundation Inc., a Broome-based children's cancer charity.  He was chair from 2008-10 and is currently the organisation's treasurer.

Susan Bailey, a former owner of two furniture and homeware stores, has 25 years' experience in the residential construction sector, working with builders and other small business participants in the industry. 

Mrs Bailey is past president of the WA Housing Industry Association, a board member of the Construction Training Fund Board, and a consultant to the industry.

The board is the accountable authority for the SBDC and was created under the Small Business Development Corporation Act 1983.  It provides an independent source of advice to the Minister for Small Business and overall direction to the corporation.

The board is focused on providing relevant and practical support to small businesses and fostering the development of policies which are conducive to a thriving sector.
