With high temperatures forecast for Perth over the coming days, it's an ideal time to be near the cool water, especially if you are an international swimmer in Western Australia for a world-class sports event.
Acting Tourism Minister John Day said 10 Olympic gold medallists and a current world record holder would take part in the 2015 BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series which kicks off at HBF Stadium, starting tomorrow.
"This is a unique, home-grown Western Australian event, featuring an international swimming competition, water polo matches and an open water swim in the Swan River on February 1," Mr Day said.
"It's also the only annual event on home soil where fans can see the Australian Swim Team compete, and there's an added competition edge this year with the inclusion of the USA team."
The Acting Minister said the USA was widely considered the most successful swimming nation of all time, having won more world championships and Olympic titles than any other country.
"Attracting US swimmers like Ryan Lochte, Tyler Clary and Cullen Jones to compete in WA against champions from Australia, China and Japan is a major coup, especially for an event that's only in its third year."
Mr Day said spectators would also see the US men's water polo players challenge Australia and the Australian women's water polo side take on China.
"All the exciting action from the event will be televised live across Australia on Network Ten's One, and broadcast around the world, providing valuable exposure of WA," he said.
The super series is proudly sponsored by the State Government through Tourism WA.
Events such as the BHP Billiton Aquatic Super Series play a critical role in the State Government's strategy to increase the value of tourism in WA to $12 billion by 2020.
