Temporary Kununurra courthouse opens
- $3.8million for court facility
- Project funded through Royalties for Regions
Judicial services in Kununurra will be significantly boosted from tomorrow, with the opening of a new courthouse on Ivanhoe Road.
Attorney General Michael Mischin and Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the State Government built the temporary courthouse at a cost of $3.8million and the building would later become Government offices.
Mr Mischin said the facility would meet the local community's justice needs until the permanent replacement courthouse was built on the same site as the old courthouse at the corner of Coolibah Drive and Messmate Way.
"The temporary courthouse will have a magistrate's courtroom; jury courtroom; registry; and remote witness, administrative, judicial, and jury deliberation facilities," the Attorney General said.
"From tomorrow, courthouse users, whether those appearing in court as defendants or witnesses, jurors, and those needing to access Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages services, should attend the temporary court premises and not the old court."
Mr Grylls said the State Government had allocated $43million in Royalties for Regions funding to build both the temporary and the replacement courthouse, which is due to open in late 2014.
"The project has taken some time to develop and I am pleased that the temporary courthouse is now being opened and look forward to the development of the new courthouse site," he said.
Mr Mischin said in the past four years, the State Government had spent more than $84.1million on capital works, minor works and technology upgrades to Western Australian courts.
In addition, $110million is being spent to complete Carnarvon, Fitzroy Crossing, Kalgoorlie and Kununurra courthouses.
