Variable speed zone for Beaufort Street
Variable speed signs have been installed on Beaufort Street in Mount Lawley, providing a major safety boost for pedestrians and other road users in the area.
The variable speed zone will lower travel speeds from 60kmh to 40kmh during peak periods of pedestrian activity.
On site today, Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said that the variable speed signs will be operating between Lincoln Street and Walcott Street.
"Main Roads has undertaken world-wide research to determine a solution for this area. Research shows that even small differences in travel speeds can result in large differences in death or serious injury," Mr O'Brien said.
"This area of Beaufort Street is an area of high pedestrian traffic and carries around 40,000 vehicles per day. It incorporates local businesses, a hotel, shopping centre precinct, on street parking and bus bays on both sides of the road in several locations.
"When entering the area from adjoining roads, motorists will see electronic speed signs displaying the speed limit giving them warning of the need to slow down."
Electronic signs will display a 40kmh limit during peak pedestrian periods. The signs will operate from:
Sunday-Thursday: 7:30am-10pm
Friday and Saturday: 7:30am-1am.
The Minister said that outside these times, the existing 60kmh limit will be displayed on the signs and apply.
"Less speed means greater safety for pedestrians and road users during peak times. When there are fewer vehicles and pedestrians, the existing 60kmh limit will apply," he said.
"This trial will be conducted for 18 months to allow the full impact of the works to be assessed with an 'after' study. At the completion of the after study, an appropriate speed limit will be implemented."
Town of Vincent Mayor Nick Catania said this was a significant project for the town in its attempt to reduce speed limits in high pedestrian areas.
In October 2008, Main Roads established a Stakeholder Reference Group, which included representatives of the Beaufort Street Network, the Town of Vincent, the Public Transport Authority, WA Police, Main Roads, the local community and local businesses. The group supports the trial as a key safety initiative.
