Variety brings more family fun to Kings Park
New picnic and play facilities open at Kings Park
Facilities funded by donations to Variety - the Children's Charity of WA
Children can crawl through tunnels, walk bridges and get climbing at a new playground in Kings Park.
Opened on the weekend in time for the start of spring, Environment Minister Albert Jacob said the new facilities at the Saw Avenue picnic area were funded by donations to the Variety WA Bash.
"The new playground and upgrades have been designed with the needs of children with disabilities in mind and are expected to bring more families to the popular Saw Avenue picnic area," Mr Jacob said.
"Children will be kept busy exploring the forts, bridges, tunnels and climbing challenges while their parents can enjoy new barbecues and picnic tables, along with striking timber artworks by local sculptor Nic Compton.
"New footpaths to improve pedestrian access between Subiaco and Kings Park are another welcome addition to the area."
The Minister said the facilities were opened on Saturday to coincide with the arrival of the Variety 'Bashers' who were welcomed home from their 5,000 kilometre journey from Sydney to Perth.
"It is the Bashers' fundraising efforts that have made this project possible and I sincerely thank them for their efforts. It was also thanks to Variety that Stage 1 of the improvement project was completed in 2009," he said.
"Both Stage 1 and the latest upgrades have seen Variety and Kings Park work in partnership to complete new facilities at the park.
"With spring now upon us, I encourage Western Australian families to make a visit to Kings Park and enjoy the spectacular scenery and great facilities on offer."
