The Federal Court today handed down a determination which recognises that native title exists for the Bunuba people in the Kimberley region.

Acting Minister for the Attorney General Tony Simpson said the determination covered a portion of Brooking Springs pastoral lease; an area to the north, west and south of Leopold Downs pastoral lease and Fairfield's pastoral lease as well as areas in Fitzroy Crossing.

Mr Simpson said this area added to the previous determination of Bunuba people lands in 2012.

"The determination was made with the consent of all parties, including the Western Australian Government and the Bunuba people, who were represented by the Kimberley Land Council," he said.

"It marks the 55th native title determination in WA and is one of several recent determinations in the Kimberley.

"There has been a significant increase over the past two years in the number of native title determinations in WA, with the State continuing to lead the country in the recognition of native title rights."
