WA's Castellorizian community celebrates centenary

Citizenship and Multicultural Interests Minister John Castrilli today congratulated the Castellorizian Association of Western Australia for nearly a century of service to Perth's Greek and non-Greek communities.

The Castellorizian Association was founded in 1912 and was the first Greek regional fraternity to have been formed anywhere in Australia.

Mr Castrilli said the association catered for the social and cultural needs of Castellorizians in WA and over the years had displayed great determination and enterprise in building a new life in the State.

"Through their hard work, Western Australians of Castellorizian descents have made significant contributions to the development of our economy, culture and society," he said.

"The association has been involved in fundraising efforts to support many local causes and events, including the first Greek Orthodox Church in Perth."

In commemoration of this month's centenary, the association will hold a seven-day program of activities and functions, culminating in a centenary gala dinner on Saturday, May 26.

The centenary celebrations have been part-funded by the State Government through the Office of Multicultural Interests' Community Grants Program (CGP).  The CGP provides funding for programs and events that promote the benefits of cultural diversity and improve participation and equity for all Western Australians.
