Some of Western Australia's longest serving Cadets WA instructors have been honoured at a celebration to recognise the State Government-funded program's 20th year.

At John Septimus Roe Anglican Community School in Mirrabooka this morning, Youth Minister Tony Simpson recognised the 18 instructors who have collectively served the program for 199 years.

"Instructors are the backbone of Cadets WA, and today we have the opportunity to celebrate some of the program's most dedicated individuals," Mr Simpson said.

"From an initial 11 schools, the Government has expanded the program to encompass more than 200 cadet units across the State with about 8,000 young people taking part.  It is estimated that more than 100,000 young people have been through the program.

"The State Government recognises the importance of providing development opportunities to young West Australians, and is now investing $3.6 million into Cadets WA each year.

"I congratulate everyone who has made the program a resounding success over the past two decades."

The Cadets WA program provides secondary school-aged students with the opportunity to develop leadership skills by undertaking adventurous training, camping, hiking and sporting in a fun environment.

There are nine Cadets WA programs on offer - emergency services, bush rangers, police rangers, Red Cross, surf lifesaving, navy, army, air force, and river rangers.
