WA group to advise State Government on NDIS
- WA Government forms a reference group to hear views on NDIS
- Disability and mental health representatives to contribute
Community opinion about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will be heard from the newly-established Western Australian NDIS Reference Group set up by the State Government.
Disability Services Minister Helen Morton, who today attended the first meeting of the group, said representatives were chosen from across the community, including people with disability, their families and carers, advocacy organisations, service providers and the Government.
"I'm looking forward to hearing the group's advice about the NDIS. The group gives people with experience of disability and mental health issues the chance to influence the WA Government's stance on this national initiative and how the NDIS may be developed and implemented in Western Australia," Mrs Morton said.
"The State Government wants to make sure any move towards a national scheme is focused on meeting the needs of people in their local communities and that funding flows straight to people with disability, not towards additional layers of bureaucracy."
The group will consider key aspects of the NDIS proposal, including individualised approaches to funding, choice and control; sector capacity and development; national quality standards, eligibility and assessment; local support networks; and proposed implementation and transition arrangements.
Reference group members include: co-chairs Peter Conran and Joan McKenna Kerr; and members Sue Agostino, Sam Jenkinson, Janet McLean, Greg Madson, Bruce Langoulant, Jen Stacey, Kerry Hawkins, Justin Lunn, Gordon Trewern, Marcus Stafford, John Gherardi, Taryn Harvey, Ron Chalmers, Tim Marney, Eddie Bartnik and Kathy Hough.
