WA youth leader heads to global Y20 summit

A go-getting young West Australian will explore the challenges and opportunities facing young people around the world when he attends the Youth 20 Summit (Y20) in Sydney this month.

A go-getting young West Australian will explore the challenges and opportunities facing young people around the world when he attends the Youth 20 Summit (Y20) in Sydney this month.

Lachlan Cooke - founder of the Indigenous Communities Education and Awareness Foundation (ICEA) - will be one of five Australian representatives to attend the international summit from July 11 to 15.

Youth Minister Tony Simpson congratulated Lachlan on being selected for the summit and said his participation would give young people a greater voice on the international stage.

"Lockie has shown tremendous leadership through his work with indigenous and non-indigenous youth at ICEA and through his role as a mentor," Mr Simpson said.

"I'm confident his role with Y20 will contribute important perspectives about issues that are important to young people."

Lachlan, 24, was named a WA Youth Mentoring Ambassador in 2013 and in the same year won the Cultural Understanding category of the National Youth Award.

He recently showed the Minister around Lombadina and Broome in WA's North-West where mentoring projects are under way with young Aboriginal children.

The Y20 is the official platform for young people from across the Group of Twenty (G20) countries to discuss the most pressing global economic challenges.
