Wembley Golf Course awarded Waterwise
- Innovation in irrigation efficiency and water recycling
- Saving water while providing quality recreation
Water Minister Terry Redman has praised Wembley Golf Course for showing leadership in water conservation and efficiency by saving over one 100 million litres of water a year.
Mr Redman said Wembley's water saving initiatives mean it was now one of only two golf clubs in Western Australia to achieve Waterwise Golf Course status. The club had joined Lake Karrinyup Country Club in achieving the highest level of accreditation - Gold.
"Wembley Golf Course is playing a leadership role in water conservation. In order to achieve Gold accreditation, it has introduced water-saving initiatives that will save an estimated 130 million litres of water every year," he said.
"These initiatives include water recycling, stormwater harvesting and irrigation systems that adjust to rainfall."
The Minister today presented Wembley Golf Club with a certificate of recognition to mark its water-saving achievements.
"The golf industry is a major consumer of non-potable water in Western Australia with an estimated annual water use of 25 billion litres per year," he said.
"Wembley Golf Course is a pioneer member of a ground breaking initiative, which promotes long-term water conservation and efficiency in the golf sector."
The Waterwise Golf Course Program is an initiative between Golf Course Superintendents Association of Western Australia, Department of Water and Irrigation Australia Limited.
It supports water conservation and efficiency by focusing on operator training, irrigation design, water budgeting, soil and turf management practices and the use of alternative water sources.
"The State Government supports this program and its aims to achieve long-term water use efficiency within the golf sector," Mr Redman said.
"The efforts of Wembley in water use efficiency, innovation and conservation are a credit to the club and to the Waterwise Golf Course Program."
