Work commences on more car parking bays at Cockburn station
Transport Minister Simon O'Brien was joined by Jandakot MLA Joe Francis at Cockburn Central train station today to officially launch works on the multi-million dollar expansion of the station's parking facilities.
Mr O'Brien said the Liberal-National Government was pleased to be fulfilling its commitment to construct 3,000 new parking bays at train stations along the Mandurah and Joondalup lines at a cost of $49.5million.
"In the lead up to the last election I pledged that if elected the Liberal-National Government would ensure more parking bays were built at Perth's suburban train stations," he said.
"The State Government, with the help of people like Joe Francis, is now delivering on that pledge - with 600 new bays earmarked for the Cockburn Central station alone."
Mr Francis welcomed the new bays and said the enhanced parking facilities would greatly assist those who currently battle for the existing number of parking bays on a daily basis.
"I am acutely aware of the pressures that are currently being placed on the station's parking infrastructure. That is why I have been working with the Minister to ensure Cockburn Central station gets its fair share of new parking bays," Mr Francis said.
Mr O'Brien said that initially 200 parking bays, complete with CCTV, would be constructed at the eastern end of the existing Knock Place car park, with work expected to be completed in mid-2010.
The next stage of the process will see a 400-bay area constructed on a site adjacent to Knock Place. This project will proceed once land negotiations and design processes have been finalised.
