YMCA Perth has been appointed to manage the $18million Mirnutharntu Maya South Hedland employment related accommodation facility.

YMCA Perth has been appointed to manage the $18million Mirnutharntu Maya South Hedland employment related accommodation facility.

The Mirnutharntu Maya contract is worth $2.547million over five years.

Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said funding was made possible through a unique partnership between the State Government's Royalties for Regions program, the Federal Government and BHP Billiton Iron Ore.

"This partnership will assist young people in the Pilbara to develop skills that will contribute towards building a sustainable future in their communities," Mr Redman said.

Housing Minister Bill Marmion said YMCA Perth had a great track record of managing similar facilities across the State.

"YMCA Perth have operated a 180-bed hostel in Perth for over 30 years and also manage three facilities in South Hedland - Wanangkura Stadium, South Hedland Aquatic Centre and Gratwick Aquatic Centre," he said.

Mr Marmion said Mirnutharntu Maya would be a 48-bed unisex facility that would also provide accommodation for hostel staff, mentors and emergency accommodation for families of trainees or apprentices.

"Appropriate and affordable accommodation will be provided for apprentices and trainees in the Pilbara, with preference given to those who are of Western Australian Aboriginal descent and aged between 16 to 25," he said.

Mirnutharntu Maya is being constructed on the Pilbara Institute's Pundulmurra Campus, providing easy access for trainees or apprentices undertaking units at the Institute.

Apprentices and trainees are expected to start moving in before the end of August.

The State Government's Royalties for Regions program has committed $8million for construction of the facility.
