Students starting year 7 at Canning Vale College in 2015 will learn in new, state-of-the-art classrooms following the completion of a new building that was officially opened today by Education Minister Peter Collier.

The building is among the first of 29 projects completed to cater for extra students in secondary school when year 7 students move next year.

Mr Collier said the $6.2million project included five classrooms, an informal area, a science laboratory, inclusive education classroom, staff studies area, staff and student toilets and a car park.

"Canning Vale College will welcome more than 270 students in years 7 and 8 in 2015, and these students will be learning in outstanding classrooms," he said.

"The expansion of the college will take enrolments from 1,291 students this year to about 1,700 students next year.

"The move of year 7 public school students to secondary school aligns with the introduction of the Australian Curriculum which has more in-depth content in each subject and higher expectations so students can succeed in, and contribute to, our modern world.

"The facilities at Canning Vale College will give year 7 students the specialist subject teaching best suited for the new Australian Curriculum."

Six new transportable classrooms will also be installed at the college by September 2014.
