Yellow box junctions to keep our traffic flowing

The State Government has revealed a concept new to Perth to deter motorists from stopping within intersections and blocking other vehicle movements.

Transport Minister Dean Nalder said yellow box junctions were used successfully around the world to show the extent of an intersection and indicate the area where drivers should not stop.

"Quite simply, a yellow box is painted on the road and motorists should not enter the marked area unless their exit from the intersection is clear," Mr Nalder said.

The yellow box junction trials are one of the many new initiatives of the Main Roads' Traffic Congestion Management Program, which looks at getting the most out of our current infrastructure to keep traffic moving.

"We will be trialling two types of yellow box junctions to determine which line markings are most effective in reminding drivers of the road rules," the Minister said.

"I get feedback from motorists about them being frustrated when they are at a green light, but cannot move because a motorist has entered an intersection, without being able to exit, and is blocking their progress.

"This trial will be important to reinforce the message not to enter an intersection unless they can exit it."
