$1.2million to improve Leach Highway and Stock Road intersection.
21/8/07
Work will commence soon on a $1.2million upgrade of the intersection at Leach Highway and Stock Road in Melville.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today announced the upgrade as one of the major initiatives to come out of the Local Impacts Committee (LIC).
"This is another example of the LIC developing a strategy for managing traffic on major roads in the south-west metropolitan corridor, including Leach Highway, South Street, High Street and Stock Road," Ms MacTiernan said.
The LIC, chaired by Riverton MLA Tony McRae, included representatives from local and State Governments, the community and the freight industry.
"The committee has worked hard to examine ways of improving the safety and efficiency of roads in our area," Mr McRae said.
"This latest project funding will reduce rear-end type crashes, provide greater efficiency at the intersection and provide better access and safety for pedestrians."
Main Roads and the City of Melville will undertake the work that involves:
- construction of a designated left-turn lane on Stock Road for northbound traffic;
- construction of double right-turn lanes on Leach Highway for eastbound traffic;
- upgrading the pedestrian crossing facilities to meet current Main Roads WA access and mobility standards; and
- provision of signal mast arms on all approaches.
The project will be followed by another LIC initiative which will upgrade the Leach Highway/North Lake Road intersection to reduce rear-end and sideswipe type crashes and improve the efficiency of the intersection.
