$1.5million bridge upgrade in the State's South-West
8/1/08
A contract has been awarded to carry out a major refurbishment of the Alexandra Bridge over the Blackwood River near Karridale.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today announced that Structural Systems (Western) Pty Ltd had been awarded a $1.57million contract to carry out the works, which would increase the life span of the bridge significantly.
Ms MacTiernan said the work would include widening the bridge, substructure repairs, replacing the bridge deck with a new concrete deck and guardrail replacement, as well as various other routine maintenance works.
"The proposed work will greatly improve safety due to the additional bridge width, while also increasing the lifespan of the bridge," she said.
"Structural Systems (Western) Pty Ltd have also indicated that they will use support from local and regional services to deliver the works, which will also benefit the local community."
The refurbishment works are scheduled to commence in February, with work estimated to be completed by August.
The contract will be managed by the Main Roads Western Australia South-West Region.
