The shortlist for the prestigious 2005 Western Australian Premier's Book Awards was today announced by Culture and Arts Minister Sheila McHale.
Ms McHale said this year's awards had attracted 134 books and scripts; equalling the record number of entries submitted in last year's awards.
"The WA Premier's Book Awards recognise the efforts of local writers and are the State's most prestigious literary awards," the Minister said.
"Authors will be competing for $80,000 prize money across seven categories and the number of entries this year indicates competition will be fierce."
Ms McHale said this year's judging panel comprised Curtin university's Prof. Brian Dibble, journalist and sub-editor Ms Lucille Fisher, historian and former Edith Cowan university dean Prof. Ed Jaggard, and former teacher-librarian Chloe Mauger who is president of the WA branch of the Children's Book Council of Australia.
The award winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday June 9 at the State Library of WA.
