Airport Upgrade for Northam
24/09/06
A new top coat seal on Northam's airport taxiway and runway will make take-off and landing safer for aircraft using the busy regional facility.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today officially opened the upgraded airstrip, which has received State Government support totalling almost $110,000.
"This project demonstrates what can be achieved through partnerships, with the Town of Northam, the Shire of Northam and the Northam Aero Club also contributing towards the cost of the works, " Ms MacTiernan said.
"The State Government, through its Regional Airports Development Scheme, has committed more than $103,000 towards these improvements, and a further $6,600 towards the development of a master plan for the airport.
"I understand that the Aero Club, the Town and the Shire of Northam are now keen to continue developing the airport, and will again seek our support.
"They see Northam Airport, which is about 90 minutes from Perth CBD, as providing an alternative for a wide range of aviation based activities, training and services.
"The airport currently handles an estimated 8,000 aircraft movements each year."
The Minister said the Regional Airports Development Scheme was the best airport infrastructure program in Australia.
