The Carpenter Government's Bill to ban the operation of betting exchanges in Western Australia and control access to WA race field information was passed by the Legislative Assembly last night.
Racing and Gaming Minister Mark McGowan said that the Government was committed to ensuring that the racing industry in Western Australia continued to grow and prosper.
"This Government has worked hard to turn our racing industry around," Mr McGowan said.
"Five years ago it was in real trouble - now it is the fastest-growing racing industry in Australia and I am determined not to put the industry's resurgence at risk by allowing betting exchanges to threaten its integrity.
"Betting exchanges allow punters to bet on a horse to lose. This opens the industry to corrupt behaviour and encourages people to profit unfairly."
The WA Government's strong stance against betting exchanges has received universal support from State, national and international racing bodies.
"As in the case with poker machines, WA is again leading the way with its uncompromising attitude towards inappropriate gambling products," the Minister said.
The Bill is expected to be introduced into the Legislative Council shortly.
