Brookton Highway to be upgraded at Karlgarin
15/1/07
A 10km section of Brookton Highway between Kondinin and Hyden will be upgraded at a cost of $3.4million.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan announced today that the section between Karlgarin Hills, about 25km west of Hyden, and Karlgarin had been identified as a priority by Main Roads and local shires.
"This section of the highway has been the subject of numerous complaints over the years relating to edge drop-off, dust and the mix of tourist and heavy farm and mining vehicles," Ms MacTiernan said.
"Main Roads will provide engineering support, material testing and survey control and the consortium of shires, led by the Kondinin Shire, will provide plant and a combined workforce including culvert installation capability."
The Minister said the shires of Corrigin, Kulin, Kondinin and Bruce Rock had agreed that the Karlgarin Hills section upgrade should be undertaken this year.
Due to delays with environmental clearances, a planned upgrade of the Gorge Rock section had been delayed by 12 months.
Major works would commence in late January 2007 and were expected to be completed in June 2007.
The 20-week project would use local resources and contractors, except for bitumen works, and funding would include $2.5million from the Safer Roads Program.
