Broome Januburu Six Seasons ballot filled by locals
27/11/06
All 53 lots in stage two of Broome's Januburu Six Seasons residential development were sold today by ballot to local residents and people working in the town.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said there was strong interest in the lots, with 190 eligible applications.
"In response to local people's housing needs, today's ballot gave preference to Broome residents and employees of businesses in Broome who are looking to build a home," Ms MacTiernan said.
"As one of Australia's favourite destinations, Broome has experienced significant growth and like many other regional towns it has been under pressure to keep up with housing demand.
"In the long term, today's release at Januburu Six Seasons will certainly help to alleviate the pressure on housing and rental accommodation in the town."
The lots included the ballot ranged in size from 534sqm to 802sqm and were priced between $175,000 and $295,000.
"The State Government, through LandCorp, has worked hard to deliver more land in the regions and today's ballot is the second release of quality residential land in Broome in six months," the Minister said.
Kimberley MLA Carol Martin, who attended today's ballot in Broome, said it was exciting to see Januburu Six Seasons take shape.
"From day one LandCorp has worked hard to incorporate the cultural heritage of the area into the subdivision, from its design and naming through to native landscaping, which is nearing completion," Mrs Martin said.
"A great many people in the local community have been involved in the landscaping of the estate including the Rubibi, as traditional owners, in addition to people from TAFE, the Clontarf Foundation and the shire.
"The development of Babagarraburu Park, complemented by public art which will be installed this week and future playground facilities, will create a great lifestyle."
Located near the southern end of Cable Beach, the Januburu Six Season residential development will eventually yield up to 290 lots, providing approximately 345 dwellings.
Design guidelines apply to all lots in Januburu Six Seasons to ensure water and energy-efficient houses are developed to suit Broome's climate. An information session about the design guidelines will be held in Broome for all successful purchasers on January 29, 2007.
Civil works on stage three are expected to start in the first half of 2007 to create another 65 lots for release next year.
