Youth Minister Ljiljanna Ravlich has called for nominations for the 2007 WA Youth Awards.
"The awards recognise and reward outstanding young Western Australians aged 13 to 25,"Ms Ravlich said.
"This is your chance to show the wider community how our young people, and the organisations that work with young people, are contributing to our society."
The WA Youth Awards has six categories, which recognise:

  • Leadership - for individuals who have demonstrated leadership and made significant achievements in their field, and made a noteworthy contribution to our community;
  • Citizenship (Individual) - for an individual who has shown extraordinary dedication towards others, or empowered others to participate their community;
  • Citizenship (Group) - for a group that has shown extraordinary dedication towards others, or empowered others to participate in their community;
  • Environment - for individuals or groups who have shown leadership and commitment to improving our environment;
  • Inspiration - for an individual who has inspired others by overcoming difficulties to contribute to our society; and
  • Active Achievement - for an individual whose extensive involvement in sport or recreation has benefited others and the community.
An overall winner will be selected as the 2007 WA Young Person of the Year.
Darren Lomman won last year's WA Young Person of the Year award.
Darren was nominated for using his engineering skills to rebuild a motorbike for a friend who was paralysed in a motorbike crash, and setting up the Disabled Recreation Club.
The club is a not-for-profit organisation that helps young people with disabilities to broaden their skills and experience.
The 2007 WA Youth Awards will be presented during National Youth Week in April.
Category winners will receive a cash prize of $2,000 and a sail aboard the STS Leeuwin.
The overall winner will receive two return tickets to a European destination, courtesy of Singapore Airlines.
Nominations close 5pm on Friday, March 2.
