Call for affordable, sustainable housing in Armadale a national first

Builders and suppliers throughout Australia are invited to work with the State Government to develop alternative design and construction techniques for sustainable housing in Western Australia.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan today launched a national call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) - in developing demonstration housing at Seville Grove near Armadale.
The nine demonstration homes would be part of an 11ha, 100-lot residential subdivision on Lake Road within the Champion Drive Precinct of the Armadale Redevelopment Authority (ARA) planning control area.
"This development will take advantage of a wonderful natural setting, being built around a large bush conservation area which will be protected and enhanced," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The demonstration homes will encourage future residents of the estate and home buyers across WA to investigate affordable and attractive homes, which use energy and water efficiently.
"They will also encourage home builders to investigate construction techniques and materials which can reduce current long waiting times for new houses.
"When completed, the development will highlight how, with careful planning and innovation, it is possible to provide affordable, innovative and sustainable housing in a superb setting."
The Minister said she expected LandCorp to offer the first lots for sale by ballot in November this year, with all homes required to pass the ARA's sustainability audit.
Purchasers would be required to:

  • install a minimum 3,000L rainwater tank - a first for WA - and water reuse systems;
  • achieve a five-star energy rating; and
  • plant at least 50 per cent native species in gardens.
Seville Grove is located near the new world-class rowing and whitewater facilities, at Champion Lakes and close to major regional road network and public transport links.
Preliminary site works will start in August, with civil construction works expected to be completed by March 2007.
