Claremont house heritage listed
6/4/06
A grand residence built for the Bunning family at 50 Victoria Avenue, Claremont, has been added to the State Government's Register of Heritage Places.
Heritage Minister Michelle Roberts today announced the interim heritage listing, saying the 1911 mansion, known as Colwyn, had significant cultural heritage value to Western Australia.
"This is a heritage gem that deserves recognition and protection at the State level," Mrs Roberts said.
"Colwyn is a very fine and intact example of a Federation-style residence and retains many of its original features, including Marseilles profile roof tiles, decorative corbelled chimneys and original timber joinery and leadlights.
"The residence is well-known for its outstanding timber work throughout. The parquetry floors, panelled dadoes, decorative fretwork, mantles and fireplace surrounds are rare features."
The house was built for Evelyn and Arthur Bunning, part-owners of the prominent WA building and timber milling company, Bunning Bros Ltd.
The Minister said registration did not prevent development and any proposed changes would be considered.
A six-week public comment period is now open for interested persons to give their views on the registration.
Town of Claremont Mayor Peter Olson welcomed the State Government's decision, saying Colwyn was one of the most notable residences in Claremont.
"It is the only visible reminder of the Federation period residences which formerly graced the river front at Freshwater Bay," Mr Olson said.
"The house is a prominent and well-known landmark viewed from the Swan River, which contributes to the community's sense of place."
