Serpentine-Jarrahdale residents are being asked to help decide on the alignment of a southern link road that would connect Albany Highway with the South Western and Tonkin Highways.
The State Government is seeking comment from the local community on the future road, which would provide access for agricultural and freight traffic travelling from the Fremantle ports to Kwinana, the Great Southern and the Central Wheatbelt Regions.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan confirmed that while the alignment was yet to be determined, Jarrahdale town site would continue to remain free of heavy vehicle traffic.
"We have ruled out using Jarrahdale Road west of Blue Rock Road and we will be working closely with the local community and the shire to find another solution," Ms MacTiernan said.
"This link road would benefit the Armadale and Kelmscott communities by providing an alternative route for heavy vehicles which currently pass through residential areas.
"This road is part of a broader strategy to increase safety and improve travel times for freight moving in and out of Fremantle, which will be a mix of road and rail transport."
The Southern Link Road Study is being undertaken by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure, to ensure the most suitable alignment is protected under the Metropolitan Region Scheme, and the relevant Town Planning Scheme.
"We will invite comment in early 2007, and I look forward to the local community getting involved by giving us their feedback," Ms MacTiernan said.
A newsletter about the study will be available in December at the following locations:
