Emama Nguda gears up for Kimberley indigenous Leadership Program
19/12/06
Premier Alan Carpenter today announced a $20,000 funding boost for the Emama Nguda Aboriginal Corporation in the Kimberley.
Mr Carpenter was in Derby today to present the State Government's cheque, which would assist the corporation in developing the Derby Indigenous Youth Leadership Program.
The Premier said the program would significantly develop the leadership skills of young indigenous leaders in the region.
"The Derby Indigenous Youth Leadership Program has been designed to address the skills gap between current and future leaders of indigenous communities," he said.
"Opportunities will be given to indigenous people to develop their leadership skills and gain knowledge on how to be involved in the development of programs and issues in communities.
"It will bring a number of young indigenous people together to find innovative ways of socially and economically sustaining their communities."
Eight young indigenous people between the ages of 17 and 25 would be selected to participate in the 12-month program, which will enable them to gain valuable skills and experience required to actively contribute to their community.
A 'Certificate II - Introduction to Community Governance' TAFE course would form part of the program.
