Perth barrister Catherine Crawford has been appointed as an additional magistrate to serve in metropolitan and regional courts around Western Australia.
Attorney General Jim McGinty congratulated Ms Crawford on her appointment and said she was highly regarded, both within the judiciary and the legal profession.
"Ms Crawford has amassed a wide range of legal experience locally and internationally, making her a valuable addition to the Magistrates Court," Mr McGinty said.
Ms Crawford graduated from UWA in 1983 with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and Bachelor of Laws.
She was admitted to practice in the same year and joined law firm Dwyer Durack and Dunphy as a solicitor and then partner.
In 1989, Ms Crawford travelled to the United Kingdom and obtained a Master of Laws degree with distinction in International Human Rights from the University of Essex.
She worked as a solicitor in the UK for two years before returning to Perth in 1991, where she became the principal legal officer with the Aboriginal Legal Service.
Before becoming a magistrate, Ms Crawford worked as a barrister at Wickham Chambers.
Ms Crawford will commence her appointment at the Central Law Courts on July 1.
She will be based in Perth and will serve in a relieving capacity in regional areas when needed.
